Passivation is intended to guarantee the good resistance to corrosion of stainless steels by the formation of a homogeneous and non-porous passive layer. It is needed whenever the passive layer has been destroyed or needs to be reinforced. Passivation also makes it possible to reduce rinsing defects by requiring operators to carry out an additional rinsing.

Decontamination-passivation can be considered as a stripping action, it dissolves the traces of oxidation on the surface as well as the metal particles embedded in the surface. Decontamination-passivation is strongly recommended after localized stripping operations or mechanical stripping (brushing, bead blasting, electrolytic stripping).
