TIG torches

The TIG torch is an essential tool for welding professionals and enthusiasts looking for precision and high-quality results.

TIG welding (Tungsten Inert Gas) uses an electric arc generated between a non-consumable tungsten electrode and the workpiece, protected by an inert shielding gas such as argon. This process produces clean, spatter-free welds and is suitable for a wide range of metals.

How a TIG torch works

TIG welding principle and the role of the torch

The process is based on the creation of an electric arc initiated by the tungsten electrode. The TIG torch maintains a stable arc while shielding the weld pool with an inert gas to prevent oxidation.

Key components: tungsten electrode, nozzle and shielding gas

The torch includes a tungsten electrode, a nozzle that directs the inert shielding gas, usually argon, and sometimes a high-frequency arc ignition system. These components ensure clean and precise welding while reducing the risk of weld contamination.

Technical characteristics of TIG torches

Cooling systems: air-cooled vs water-cooled

TIG torches can be air-cooled or water-cooled. Water cooling is recommended for intensive welding applications or high-amperage work, helping to extend consumable life while improving operator comfort.

Power, amperage and compatibility with inverter welding machines

The torch must be selected according to its supported amperage and the welding machine being used, such as an inverter welder. Compatibility with the required polarity and current type, whether direct current or alternating current, is also essential for reliable welding performance.

Compatible materials and shielding gases

Metals that can be welded with a TIG torch

The TIG process is suitable for a wide range of metals and alloys, including stainless steel, aluminium, light alloys, copper, nickel and carbon steel. It produces clean welds on both thin sheet metal and materials with varying thicknesses.

The role of argon and other shielding gases

The inert shielding gas, generally pure argon or an argon-based mixture, protects the welding area from atmospheric contamination and helps prevent oxidation. Depending on the application, helium or argon-helium mixtures can also be used to improve penetration and weld pool fluidity.

Advantages of TIG welding compared with other processes

Weld precision and quality

TIG welding produces highly precise weld beads and is particularly suitable for applications requiring a clean, high-quality finish with minimal grinding, unlike some semi-automatic welding processes or shielded metal arc welding.

Suitable for delicate alloys and thin sheet metal

Thanks to precise control of the arc and shielding gas, TIG welding is particularly suitable for light metals, stainless steel, aluminium and titanium. The process avoids slag formation and provides excellent control over heat input, helping to limit workpiece distortion.

How to choose a TIG torch

Torch length and ergonomics

It is important to select a torch suited to the working environment and required reach. Cable length, weight and handling characteristics, such as an ergonomic trigger or switch, can directly affect operator comfort and welding precision.

Compatibility with the welding machine and accessories

The torch must be compatible with the welding machine and its accessories, including nozzles, collets and standard electrode holders, to ensure versatility and easy maintenance.

Professional applications of TIG torches

Use in metal fabrication and sheet metal work

TIG torches are widely used by metal fabricators and sheet metal workers to assemble complex metal components requiring a high level of weld quality, particularly for tanks, pipework and fabricated metal structures.

Precision welding in industry and specialised trades

The TIG process is also widely used in aerospace, precision engineering, stainless steel fabrication and light alloy applications. It makes it possible to produce clean, strong and visually consistent weld beads, making it particularly suitable for demanding professional welding applications.
